Laminar Research's X-Plane 12.3.1 beta introduces a reworked atmospheric turbulence model tied to real-world SIGMET data and delivers measurable frame-rate improvements in dense urban and airport scenery. ToLiss and FlightFactor are already validating compatibility.
Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.3.1 as a public beta, headlined by a substantially revised turbulence model that ties atmospheric instability to real-world weather data more directly than the previous implementation. The new model differentiates between convective turbulence, mechanical turbulence generated by terrain and obstacles, and clear-air turbulence associated with jet stream shear. For simmers flying airliners on VATSIM or IVAO, this produces more realistic ride quality on departure and arrival, particularly in the terminal area where low-level wind shear and gust fronts are now better represented.
The update also delivers frame-rate improvements in complex scenery, with Laminar citing gains of 15–25% in dense urban areas and large airports. The improvements stem from optimized mesh culling and a revised shader pipeline that reduces overdraw in areas with high object density. Users of high-fidelity add-ons from ToLiss and FlightFactor report that the A340-600 and A350-900 remain stable under the new build, though both developers are still validating autopilot behavior in turbulence.
X-Plane 12.3.1 also includes updated airport data via the Scenery Gateway, a revised cloud rendering pass that reduces the notorious "pixelated" appearance of distant cumulus, and fixes for several long-standing issues with the G1000 and GNS 430/530 avionics. Navigraph navdata remains fully compatible.
For X-Plane users, this is a meaningful step forward. The turbulence model in particular addresses one of the platform's weaker areas relative to MSFS 2024, and the performance gains make complex airliner operations more viable on mid-range hardware. The beta is available now via the X-Plane installer.
