Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.3, featuring a completely rewritten ATC system with improved voice recognition, realistic clearances, and a new onboard weather radar simulation. The update also includes performance optimizations and updated default aircraft.
Laminar Research has released version 12.3 of X-Plane 12, a substantial update that addresses two of the platform's most requested features: ATC and weather radar. The new ATC system, built from the ground up, moves away from the scripted interactions of previous versions and introduces a more dynamic, context-aware model. Pilots can now request deviations around weather, expect vectors for approach, and receive realistic clearances that adhere to ICAO phraseology. The voice recognition engine has been improved and now supports a wider range of accents and microphone qualities, reducing the frustration of repeated callouts.
The weather radar is another significant addition. Unlike the simple precipitation map in earlier versions, the new radar simulates actual reflectivity based on the simulator's weather model, including attenuation and beam tilt. This means that flying into a convective cell will produce a realistic radar return, and pilots must interpret the display correctly to avoid hazardous weather. The radar is integrated into default aircraft like the Cirrus SR22 and the Robinson R22, and third-party developers can now access the API to implement it in their add-ons. ToLiss has already confirmed that its A320neo and A340-600 will support the new radar in upcoming patches.
Performance has also been a focus. Laminar has optimized the rendering pipeline, particularly for Vulkan, resulting in improved frame rates in dense scenery areas. The default aircraft, including the Cessna 172 and the Baron B58, have received flight model refinements and updated avionics. X-Plane 12.3 is available now as a free update for all X-Plane 12 users. For those on the fence about switching from MSFS, this update makes a compelling case for X-Plane's continued relevance in the study-sim market.
