X-Plane 12.3 Beta Adds Vulkan Improvements and New Default G1000 NXI

Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.3 public beta, featuring Vulkan performance enhancements and a completely rebuilt default G1000 NXI avionics suite. The update also includes improved ATC voice recognition and new weather radar for third-party developers.

Laminar Research has pushed out the public beta for X-Plane 12.3, and it’s a significant update for users of the simulator. The most noticeable change is the complete rewrite of the default G1000 NXI avionics, which now features smoother rendering, more intuitive knob logic, and better integration with the simulator’s weather and traffic systems. The new G1000 also supports the full WAAS LPV approach capability, making it a viable option for IFR enthusiasts who prefer default aircraft.

Under the hood, the Vulkan renderer has received another round of optimizations, particularly for AMD GPUs, with improved frame pacing and reduced stutter in dense scenery. Laminar has also introduced a new ‘adaptive mesh’ system that dynamically adjusts terrain tessellation based on viewing distance, potentially improving performance without sacrificing visual quality. ATC voice recognition has been upgraded, with better handling of non-native English accents, and the weather radar now offers a more realistic beam tilt and gain control for third-party developers to integrate into their aircraft.

Beta testers have reported mixed results with the new ATC system, but overall feedback is positive. The update is available via the public beta channel, and Laminar expects to release a stable version within a month. This is a welcome breath of fresh air for X-Plane users who have been waiting for meaningful improvements to the default experience.
