Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.2.1, featuring a revamped ATC system with better vectoring and altitude assignments, plus a new weather radar API for third-party developers. The update also includes performance optimizations and updated default aircraft.
Laminar Research has pushed X-Plane 12.2.1 to the stable channel, a significant update that addresses several long-standing issues and introduces new features. The most notable change is the overhauled ATC system, which now provides more realistic vectoring, step climbs, and altitude assignments. The new logic considers terrain, traffic, and aircraft performance, resulting in smoother arrivals and departures. Early reports from VATSIM controllers suggest the improved ATC is more predictable and less prone to nonsensical instructions.
For developers, the update introduces a new weather radar API that allows third-party aircraft to render precipitation returns accurately based on the simulator's weather engine. This will enable study-level airliners like the ToLiss A320neo and FlightFactor 757 to implement fully functional weather radar displays. The API also supports turbulence and wind shear depiction, adding another layer of realism.
Performance optimizations include improved Vulkan memory management and reduced CPU overhead in dense scenery areas. Users with mid-range hardware should see a 10-15% increase in frame rates, particularly in urban environments. The default aircraft—including the Cessna 172 and Cirrus SR22—have received flight model refinements and updated avionics.
X-Plane 12.2.1 is available now via the auto-updater. Laminar continues to demonstrate its commitment to the platform, and this update should satisfy both casual and serious simmers.
