Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.2.0, featuring a completely rewritten ATC system with improved SID/STAR handling and realistic controller phraseology. The update also includes a new weather radar API for third-party aircraft developers.
Laminar Research has pushed a major update to X-Plane 12, version 12.2.0, which introduces a long-awaited overhaul of the default ATC system. The new ATC engine now supports full SID and STAR assignments, with controllers issuing clearances that adhere to real-world phraseology. It also includes dynamic altitude assignments based on aircraft performance and weather conditions. This update aims to provide a more immersive experience for pilots flying online networks like VATSIM and IVAO.
The update also brings a new weather radar API, allowing third-party developers to integrate realistic weather radar displays into their aircraft. This API provides access to precipitation density, turbulence, and wind shear data, enabling more accurate representation of onboard radar systems. ToLiss and FlightFactor have already announced plans to incorporate this API into their upcoming aircraft updates.
In addition to these features, X-Plane 12.2.0 includes performance optimizations for Vulkan and Metal, resulting in improved frame rates on both Windows and macOS. The update also fixes several bugs related to the G1000 and GNS430 avionics, and improves the simulation of turboprop engine dynamics.
Laminar Research's Austin Meyer commented, "We're committed to pushing the boundaries of flight simulation. This update is a testament to our ongoing efforts to enhance the core simulator and support our vibrant third-party ecosystem." The update is available now via the X-Plane installer.
