Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.2.0, featuring a rebuilt ATC system with better SID/STAR handling and enhanced weather radar. The update also improves VR performance and adds new default aircraft.

Laminar Research has rolled out X-Plane 12.2.0, a significant update that addresses long-standing community requests. The headline feature is a completely overhauled ATC system, which now generates more realistic clearances, including proper SID/STAR assignments based on current weather and traffic. The new ATC uses a text-to-speech engine with improved phraseology and can handle complex reroutes. It also integrates with VATSIM and IVAO via a new pilot client API, allowing seamless switching between offline and online ATC.

Weather simulation has also been upgraded. The new weather radar now displays precipitation intensity and turbulence with higher fidelity, and the cloud rendering has been optimized for better performance. The update includes a new default aircraft: the Cirrus SR22 with G1000 avionics, complete with working autopilot and engine model. Additionally, VR users will benefit from a 15% performance improvement thanks to optimized rendering pipelines and foveated rendering support.

Other changes include updated navigation data (AIRAC 2609), improved ground handling, and fixes for the FMS in the default 737. Third-party developers have already begun updating their products for compatibility, with ToLiss and FlightFactor confirming that their aircraft are compatible. X-Plane 12.2.0 is available now via the simulator's updater. This update reinforces Laminar's commitment to improving the core simulation experience.
