Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.2, introducing a completely rewritten ATC system, enhanced weather radar simulation, and performance optimizations. The update also includes new default aircraft and improved VR support.

Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.2, a substantial update that brings a long-awaited overhaul to the simulator's ATC system. The new ATC, which was previewed earlier this year, features improved voice recognition, more realistic clearances, and better handling of complex procedures such as SIDs and STARs. The system now supports full PBN operations, including RNP AR approaches, and integrates with the simulator's navigation database to ensure accurate routing.

In addition to the ATC improvements, X-Plane 12.2 introduces a new weather radar simulation that models attenuation, ground clutter, and beam tilt. This allows pilots to use the radar more realistically in convective weather, with the radar display now affected by precipitation intensity and range. The update also includes new default aircraft: the Cirrus SR22 and the Robinson R44 helicopter, both with detailed systems and flight models.

Performance has been a key focus, with Laminar claiming up to 20% improvement in frame rates on multi-core CPUs. The update also includes improved VR support, with better hand controller integration and reduced motion sickness. The scenery system has been updated to support new DSF files with higher-resolution elevation data, and the default airports have received updates to reflect current real-world layouts.

The update is available now for all X-Plane 12 users. Third-party developers have already begun updating their add-ons for compatibility, with ToLiss and FlightFactor confirming that their Airbus and Boeing products will be updated in the coming weeks. Laminar has also announced that a public beta for X-Plane 12.3 will begin in December, focusing on further ATC refinements and new particle effects.
