Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.2, a significant update that overhauls the default ATC system and introduces a new weather radar simulation. The update also includes performance improvements and new aircraft features.

Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.2, the latest major update to its flagship flight simulator. The headline feature is a complete overhaul of the default ATC system, which now uses a more realistic vectoring algorithm and supports SID/STAR procedures with altitude constraints. The new ATC system also includes improved voice recognition and a more intuitive interface for requesting clearances and making position reports.

Another major addition is the new weather radar simulation, which now accurately models the attenuation of radar signals through precipitation. The radar display shows different intensities of precipitation, and pilots must use proper tilt management to avoid ground clutter. This feature is particularly useful for airliner simulations, and third-party developers like ToLiss and FlightFactor are expected to integrate it into their aircraft.

The update also includes a range of performance improvements, including better CPU utilization and reduced stuttering in dense scenery areas. Laminar has also added new particle effects for engine smoke and contrails, and improved the lighting model for runway and taxiway lights. X-Plane 12.2 is available now as a free update for all X-Plane 12 users. With these enhancements, Laminar continues to position X-Plane 12 as a serious platform for procedural training and realistic flight simulation.
