Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.1.3, an update that enhances the default ATC system with better SID/STAR handling and introduces a new weather radar API for third-party developers. The update also includes performance optimizations for Vulkan and Metal.
Laminar Research has rolled out X-Plane 12.1.3, a substantial update that addresses long-standing community requests. The default ATC system has received a major overhaul, with improved handling of SID/STAR procedures and more realistic altitude clearances. ATC now recognizes RNAV and RNP approaches, and will assign them based on weather and traffic. The update also adds the ability for pilots to request direct-to waypoints and holds, bringing it closer to real-world operations.
A new weather radar API has been introduced, allowing third-party developers to integrate realistic weather radar displays into their aircraft. This API provides access to precipitation density, turbulence, and wind shear data, enabling features like predictive wind shear alerts. Several developers, including ToLiss and FlightFactor, have already announced support for the API in upcoming updates. Additionally, X-Plane 12.1.3 includes performance optimizations for both Vulkan and Metal, resulting in higher frame rates in dense scenery areas.
Other changes include updated airport data, improved ground handling for taildraggers, and fixes for several crash-to-desktop issues. The update is available now via the X-Plane installer. Laminar Research has also confirmed that work on X-Plane 12.2 is ongoing, with a focus on new particle effects and enhanced lighting.
