Laminar Research has detailed the upcoming 12.1.2 update for X-Plane 12, which introduces significant ATC enhancements, a new weather radar API for third-party developers, and improved VR performance. The update is currently in public beta.
Laminar Research has released the public beta for X-Plane 12.1.2, an update that promises to address some of the community's most requested features. The headline improvement is a revamped ATC system that now better handles complex clearances, including SID/STAR assignments and altitude restrictions. The new ATC logic also incorporates real-world phraseology and improved vectoring, making online flying on VATSIM and IVAO feel more authentic when transitioning from the default ATC.
For developers, the 12.1.2 update introduces a new weather radar API, allowing aircraft like the ToLiss A340-600 and FlightFactor A350 to render accurate precipitation returns based on the simulator's volumetric weather. This API also supports turbulence and wind shear depiction, enhancing situational awareness during approach. Additionally, Laminar has optimized VR performance, reducing stutters and improving frame rates in complex scenery areas.
The update also includes fixes for several bugs, such as incorrect autopilot behavior in icing conditions and inaccurate fuel burn on long-haul flights. Third-party developers have already begun integrating the new API; ToLiss has confirmed that its A340 will receive a weather radar update in the coming weeks. X-Plane 12.1.2 is expected to exit beta by the end of the month. For X-Plane enthusiasts, this update represents a significant step forward in both core simulation and developer support.
