Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.1.2 beta, introducing a new weather radar system with tilt and gain controls, plus volumetric cloud improvements. The update also refines the G1000 glass cockpit integration.

X-Plane 12 has taken a significant step forward with the release of version 12.1.2 beta, which introduces a major overhaul to the weather radar simulation. The new system, developed by Laminar Research in collaboration with third-party developers, offers realistic radar returns based on precipitation intensity and storm cell structure. Users can now adjust tilt and gain, providing a more accurate representation of how real airborne weather radar operates. This is particularly valuable for virtual pilots flying in convective weather, as it allows for better storm avoidance.

In addition to the weather radar, 12.1.2 brings enhanced volumetric cloud rendering, with improved light scattering and more defined cloud layers. The update also addresses several bugs in the G1000 glass cockpit, including smoother map panning and more accurate terrain depiction. Performance has been optimized for both Metal and Vulkan backends, with a notable reduction in stuttering during cloud transitions.

Beta testers have reported positive results, with the new radar providing a much more immersive experience during stormy approaches. Laminar Research expects the final release to arrive within a month, pending feedback from the community. Meanwhile, third-party developers like ToLiss and FlightFactor are already integrating the new radar into their aircraft models, ensuring compatibility across the platform.
