Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.1.0, a major update that overhauls the default ATC and introduces real-time weather radar. The update also includes new aircraft and performance improvements.
Laminar Research has launched X-Plane 12.1.0, a substantial update that addresses long-standing requests from the community. The headline feature is a completely revamped ATC system that now supports SID/STAR clearances, altitude restrictions, and more natural phraseology. The new ATC uses a text-to-speech engine with regional accents and can handle complex operations at busy airports like KLAX and EGLL. It also integrates with online networks via a new plugin API, allowing third-party clients like VATSIM's xPilot to interface more deeply.
Weather has also seen significant improvements. The new weather radar accurately depicts precipitation, turbulence, and wind shear, with a realistic tilt and gain control. Real-world weather injection now uses METAR and TAF data more precisely, including cloud layers and visibility. The update also adds two new default aircraft: the Robinson R22 helicopter and the Van's RV-10, both featuring high-fidelity flight models and 3D cockpits. Performance optimizations include better Vulkan and Metal rendering, resulting in higher frame rates on both Windows and macOS.
For serious simmers, X-Plane 12.1.0 represents a major step forward in default functionality, reducing the need for third-party ATC and weather add-ons. The update is available now as a free download for all X-Plane 12 users. Laminar Research has also announced that a new version of the popular default 737-800 will be released later this year, featuring a more detailed FMS and improved systems. With this update, X-Plane 12 continues to be a compelling platform for both VFR and IFR flying.
