Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.1.0 public beta, introducing a new weather radar model, improved cloud rendering, and Vulkan optimizations. The update also includes fixes for the G1000 and better multi-monitor support.

Laminar Research has announced the release of X-Plane 12.1.0 public beta, a substantial update that brings a host of improvements to the simulator. The headline feature is a completely revamped weather radar system, with more accurate depiction of precipitation intensity and better integration with the default G1000 and G530 units. This allows pilots to see actual storm cells and plan deviations more realistically.

Cloud rendering has also been overhauled, with new volumetric algorithms that produce more natural cumulus and stratus layers. The update claims up to 20% better frame rates in Vulkan mode, thanks to optimized shader compilation and reduced CPU overhead. Multi-monitor users will notice improved peripheral vision options, which help reduce distortion on side displays.

In addition to visual enhancements, the update addresses several long-standing bugs, including issues with the flight model at high angles of attack and incorrect autopilot behavior in certain aircraft. Third-party developers like ToLiss and FlightFactor are already working on compatibility updates, and some have reported that their aircraft benefit from the improved flight dynamics.

The beta is available via the X-Plane Installer for all users who own X-Plane 12. Laminar encourages users to report any issues through the official forums. A stable release is expected within a few weeks, pending beta feedback.
