Laminar Research has released the first public beta of X-Plane 12.10, featuring a new weather radar simulation with true reflectivity and improved cloud shadows. The update also includes enhancements to the G1000 avionics suite and performance boosts for Vulkan.
Laminar Research has opened the beta gates for X-Plane 12.10, a major update that brings a host of improvements to the simulator’s weather and avionics systems. The most anticipated feature is the new weather radar simulation, which now models actual reflectivity based on precipitation intensity and type. Pilots can expect more realistic returns in convective weather, with the radar display showing distinct cells and gradients that match the underlying weather model.
Cloud shadows have also been overhauled, with smoother transitions and more accurate placement based on the sun angle and cloud layer thickness. This adds a new level of immersion when flying through broken layers or under overcast skies. The G1000 avionics suite has received an upgrade as well, with improved map decluttering and better handling of VNAV in approaches.
Performance tweaks include optimized Vulkan rendering for AMD GPUs, which should yield higher frame rates in dense urban areas. Laminar has also addressed several bugs related to AI aircraft and ATC communication. The beta is available now through the X-Plane installer for users who have opted into public betas. As with any beta, some instability may be present, but early reports suggest this is a solid step forward for the platform.
