The online network saw over 5,000 concurrent pilots during FSExpo weekend. A new 'Advanced Approach' rating will focus on RNP AR and low-visibility operations.
VATSIM has reported record-breaking traffic during the FSExpo 2026 weekend, with over 5,000 concurrent pilots connected across its global network. The surge was driven by event flights simulating real-world operations at major hubs like KLAX, EGLL, and RJTT. The network also handled over 1,200 controllers during peak hours, demonstrating the growing popularity of online flying.
In a keynote at FSExpo, VATSIM announced a new pilot rating: the Advanced Approach Rating (AAR). This rating will test pilots on RNP AR approaches, low-visibility operations, and complex missed approach procedures. Candidates will need to demonstrate proficiency in FMS programming, energy management, and adherence to published minima. The rating is expected to launch in early 2027.
VATSIM also revealed that it is working on a new pilot client with improved voice quality and a modern UI. The organization continues to expand its training resources, including scenario-based tutorials for airliner and GA operations. The next major event, Cross the Pond, is scheduled for November 2026.
