VATSIM has surpassed 120,000 active controllers worldwide and introduced a restructured Pilot Rating Pathway with scenario-based exams. The move aims to standardize competency across its 100+ divisions.

VATSIM has announced a major milestone: more than 120,000 active controllers across its global network, with peak concurrent connections exceeding 3,800 during last month's Cross the Pond event. Alongside the milestone, the network has rolled out a revised Pilot Rating Pathway (PRP), replacing the legacy P1–P4 structure with scenario-based assessments aligned to ICAO language and competency frameworks.

The new pathway introduces a 'Departure & Arrival' module that tests SID/STAR compliance, RNAV holding entry, and phraseology under live ATC. A separate 'Enroute' module covers oceanic procedures, Mach number technique, and contingency handling. Pilots must complete each module with a certified VATSIM instructor before advancing.

The change is designed to raise baseline competency as the network grows, particularly in busy European airspace where RNP approach clearances and speed control are common. VATSIM's Pilot Training Department notes that the new exams will be rolled out division-by-division through Q1 2027, with legacy ratings honored during the transition.

For simmers flying complex airliners like the Fenix A320 or PMDG 737, the revised PRP should translate to more realistic interaction with controllers, especially during events. VATSIM has also updated its pilot client documentation to reflect MSFS 2024's new multiplayer APIs, improving traffic injection reliability.
