The network’s 48-hour ‘World Flight’ event saw record participation, with over 100,000 unique members connecting across 1,200 airports. ATC coverage extended to normally quiet regions, highlighting the community’s global reach.

VATSIM’s annual World Flight event, held this past weekend, shattered previous participation records. According to network statistics, more than 100,000 unique members connected over the 48-hour period, with a peak concurrent count of 8,500 pilots and 1,200 controllers. The event encouraged flyers to traverse the globe, with ATC coverage spanning from Auckland (NZAA) to Reykjavik (BIKF) and dozens of airports in between that rarely see online traffic.

The surge in activity placed significant load on VATSIM’s infrastructure, but the network held steady. “We’ve invested heavily in server capacity and voice codec optimization over the past year,” said a VATSIM supervisory controller. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re already planning for even larger events.” The event also showcased the community’s generosity, with over $50,000 raised for aviation charities through associated streams and auctions.

For serious simmers, the weekend was a reminder of what makes VATSIM special: realistic procedures, professional ATC, and a shared passion for aviation. Many participants flew complex airliner routes, filing preferred routes and executing SIDs and STARs with precision. The event also highlighted the growing popularity of MSFS 2024 and X-Plane 12, both of which saw heavy usage. VATSIM plans to release a detailed after-action report later this month, including controller feedback and technical metrics.
