VATSIM achieved a new record of over 100,000 concurrent controllers during its 'World Flight 2026' event, highlighting the growing popularity of online ATC simulation. The event saw participation from all major regions and included full ATC coverage at 50+ airports.
VATSIM, the world’s largest online flight simulation network, has announced a new milestone: over 100,000 concurrent controllers during its annual 'World Flight 2026' event held last weekend. The event, which ran for 24 hours, featured full ATC coverage at more than 50 airports worldwide, including major hubs like KLAX, EGLL, OMDB, and YSSY. According to VATSIM, the peak occurred at 1800Z on Saturday, with 102,347 controllers and 45,000 pilots connected simultaneously—a testament to the network’s robust infrastructure and the dedication of its volunteer community.
The event also showcased the growing integration of VATSIM with modern flight simulators. Many pilots flew complex IFR routes using advanced add-ons like the PMDG 737, Fenix A320, and iniBuilds A300, relying on VATSIM’s CPDLC and voice services. The network’s new pilot client, vPilot 3.0, which supports MSFS 2024 and X-Plane 12 natively, performed flawlessly under the load, according to user reports. VATSIM also introduced a new scheduling system for controllers, allowing for better coordination during high-traffic periods.
For the flight simulation community, this milestone underscores the importance of online flying as a core aspect of the hobby. VATSIM has announced plans to further expand its infrastructure, with new servers in Asia and South America expected online by early 2027. The network also continues to work with developers to improve model matching and reduce latency. As simulation technology advances, VATSIM remains the gold standard for realistic online ATC, and events like World Flight 2026 demonstrate the passion and professionalism of its community.
