VATSIM has surpassed one million registered accounts and is rolling out a new Opus-based voice codec alongside a revised pilot rating structure. The network aims to improve audio clarity and training standards for virtual controllers and pilots.

VATSIM has reached a major milestone: over one million registered members worldwide. To mark the occasion, the network has announced a significant infrastructure upgrade, including a new voice codec based on Opus that promises lower latency and higher fidelity for controller-pilot communications. The codec will be gradually deployed across all regions, with initial testing on the VATSIM Audio for VATSIM (AFV) platform.

In addition, VATSIM is overhauling its pilot rating system. The new structure introduces a more granular progression, with separate endorsements for complex airspace and advanced aircraft systems. The aim is to better align virtual pilot skills with real-world standards, particularly for IFR operations. The revamped rating will require candidates to demonstrate proficiency in areas such as RNAV SID/STAR execution, holding pattern entry, and emergency handling.

Community leaders have welcomed the changes, noting that the increased realism will benefit event participation and overall immersion. VATSIM also plans to integrate with popular flight planning tools like SimBrief by Navigraph, allowing seamless route uploads. The network continues to be the premier choice for online ATC simulation, and these updates underscore its commitment to continuous improvement. Training materials and documentation are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
