VATSIM's flagship Cross the Pond event saw a record number of participants this year, with over 2,500 pilots flying across the North Atlantic. The event also marked the debut of new oceanic clearance procedures and improved datalink simulation.
VATSIM's Cross the Pond (CTP) event, held last weekend, set a new record for participation with over 2,500 pilots and 400 controllers online. The event, which simulates the real-world twice-daily crossing of the North Atlantic, saw departures from airports like EGLL, LFPG, and EBBR, arriving at KJFK, KBOS, and CYYZ. This year, VATSIM implemented new oceanic clearance procedures that more closely mirror real-world NAT tracks, including accurate SELCAL checks and position reporting via datalink.
The event also featured the debut of a new datalink simulation on the VATSIM network, allowing pilots to request oceanic clearances via CPDLC (Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications) directly from their aircraft's FMS. This was made possible through a collaboration with Navigraph, which provided updated navdata that includes CPDLC logon codes for the simulated oceanic centers. Aircraft like the PMDG 737 and Fenix A320 were able to use the feature, adding a new layer of realism to the crossing.
Controllers reported smooth operations despite the high volume, attributing the success to improved training and the new procedures. The event was streamed live on VATSIM's Twitch channel, drawing thousands of viewers. Planning for next year's CTP is already underway, with hints of a new route structure that may include the South Atlantic. For the flight simulation community, Cross the Pond remains the premier long-haul event, showcasing the best of online flying and realistic procedures.
