VATSIM is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month, marking a quarter-century of online ATC. The network has seen record-breaking traffic in 2026 and is launching a new pilot training initiative to support its growing community.
VATSIM, the world's largest online flight simulation network, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this October. Founded in 2001, the network has grown from a small group of enthusiasts to a global community of over 100,000 active members. In 2026 alone, VATSIM has recorded over 1.5 million flight hours and 2.5 million ATC operations, setting new records for concurrent users during major events like Cross the Pond and CTP.
To mark the occasion, VATSIM is launching a new pilot training initiative called "VATSIM Ascend." The program provides structured training for new pilots, covering everything from basic radio communications to advanced IFR procedures. The initiative includes a series of online workshops, mentorship programs, and a new rating system that recognizes pilot proficiency. The goal is to improve the overall quality of simulation on the network and reduce the barrier to entry for newcomers.
VATSIM has also announced upgrades to its technology infrastructure, including a new voice server system that reduces latency and improves audio quality. The network's popular pilot client, vPilot, has been updated to support MSFS 2024 and X-Plane 12 natively, with improved traffic synchronization and weather integration. As the simulation community continues to grow, VATSIM remains the gold standard for realistic online ATC, and its 25th anniversary is a testament to the dedication of its volunteers and members.
