VATSIM's new program requires controllers to pass a Navigraph-based radar simulation test for endorsement, aiming to standardize ATC quality across busy FIRs. The first phase targets European ARTCCs with high traffic density.

VATSIM has announced a new regional controller endorsement system, developed in partnership with Navigraph, to raise the bar for ATC quality across its network. The program requires controllers to pass a radar simulation test using Navigraph's new ATC training tool, which simulates real-time traffic scenarios and evaluates separation, phraseology, and decision-making. The first phase will target European ARTCCs with the highest traffic density, such as EDGG, LFFF, and EGTT, but will expand globally in 2027.

The initiative comes after years of complaints from pilots about inconsistent ATC coverage and procedural errors. VATSIM's Director of ATC, Marcus Whitfield, said the goal is to 'ensure that every controller, regardless of experience, meets a minimum standard of proficiency before being allowed to control online.' The program includes both theoretical and practical components, with the radar simulation test being the final hurdle.

Navigraph's ATC training tool, which is still in beta, uses real-world traffic data and incorporates the same charts and navdata used by pilots. It allows controllers to practice in a virtual radar room with realistic traffic flows and unexpected events, such as go-arounds and weather deviations. The tool is expected to be released to the public later this year, and VATSIM has already partnered with IVAO to explore cross-network certification.

We see this as a positive step for the community, as it could lead to more professional and realistic online ATC, which is a key part of the simulation experience. However, some controllers worry about the added pressure and whether the training will be accessible to all. VATSIM has said that it will provide free training materials and support to help controllers prepare.
