VATSIM's Cross the Pond event this past weekend saw a record 3,200 pilots and 1,100 controllers participate, making it the largest online flying event in the network's history. The event featured real-world weather and full ATC coverage across the North Atlantic.
VATSIM's bi-annual Cross the Pond (CTP) event, held last Saturday, shattered previous participation records with 3,200 pilots and 1,100 controllers online simultaneously. The event, which connects Europe and North America, saw departures from major hubs like EGLL, EDDF, and LFPG, with arrivals into KJFK, KBOS, and CYYZ. Controllers provided full oceanic clearance delivery and procedural separation, simulating real-world NAT tracks.
The record turnout was facilitated by improvements to the VATSIM voice system and a new slot-booking system that reduced initial connection delays. Pilots navigated using real-world weather from Active Sky and Navigraph charts, with many opting for complex RNAV (RNP) approaches. The event also highlighted the growing popularity of MSFS 2024, with over 70% of participants using the platform.
VATSIM leadership praised the community's professionalism, noting a significant decrease in deviation reports compared to previous events. The next CTP is scheduled for March 2027, with a focus on transpacific routes. In the meantime, the network encourages members to participate in regular regional events to maintain proficiency.
