PMDG has released a significant update for the 737-800 in MSFS, introducing refined VNAV descent planning and enhanced FMC functions. The update also addresses autopilot lateral tracking issues reported by the community.
PMDG today pushed a comprehensive update for their highly regarded Boeing 737-800 for Microsoft Flight Simulator, bringing version 3.0.97 to users. The update focuses on refining the aircraft's VNAV descent logic, which has been a point of contention among virtual airline pilots operating into challenging terrain like Innsbruck (LOWI) and Queenstown (NZQN). The new logic more closely replicates the Boeing FMC's idle-thrust descent path prediction, reducing the need for manual intervention during STARs with altitude constraints.
In addition, the FMC now includes a more accurate implementation of the 'DES NOW' prompt and improved step-down altitude capture during RNAV approaches. Robert Randazzo, CEO of PMDG, noted that the update was developed in collaboration with real-world 737 pilots to ensure fidelity. The update also tweaks the EFIS map display to declutter waypoint labels at lower zoom levels, a quality-of-life improvement for busy terminal environments.
Beta testers have reported smoother LNAV tracking during complex SID/STAR transitions, with fewer oscillations around the flight plan path. The update is available now through the PMDG Operations Center and should be picked up automatically by existing users. This refinement underscores PMDG's commitment to maintaining their products long after release, a key factor in their enduring popularity among serious simmers.
