Asobo Studio releases the Sim Update 17 beta for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, introducing revamped weather radar, a redesigned ATC system, and three new handcrafted airports including KSFO and LFPG.

Asobo Studio has opened the public beta for Sim Update 17 (SU17) of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, and the patch notes are substantial. The update focuses on two long-awaited areas: a more realistic weather radar implementation and a ground-up overhaul of the default ATC system.

The new weather radar, now available on all airliners including the default Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A320neo, uses simulated radar returns based on actual precipitation data and terrain. It supports tilt and gain control, and the display accurately reflects returns up to 120 nautical miles. Early testers report that storm cells and convective activity now appear as you'd expect during a real departure, making it a crucial tool for thunderstorms avoidance.

On the ATC front, the revised system introduces more natural phraseology, better altitude and speed assignments, and improved sequencing on SIDs and STARs. The 'Request VFR' option now works from the ground, and a new 'Go around' command has been added for missed approaches. While still not a substitute for VATSIM, the improvements are a significant step forward for offline flyers.

SU17 also adds three new handcrafted airports: San Francisco International (KSFO), Paris Charles de Gaulle (LFPG), and London City (EGLC). All feature detailed terminal interiors, dynamic lighting, and accurate runway markings, with KSFO including the new Terminal 1 boarding area. The beta is available now via the Microsoft Store, and the full release is expected in late September.
