Asobo Studio has released Sim Update 5 (SU5) for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, delivering a substantial performance boost and a range of new features. The update includes significant optimizations to the rendering engine, reducing CPU and GPU load, particularly in dense urban areas. According to Asobo, users can expect up to a 20% increase in frame rates on high-end systems, and improved stability on lower-end hardware. The update also addresses memory leaks that caused crashes during long-haul flights.
AI traffic has been overhauled with more realistic behavior, including proper holding patterns, go-arounds, and runway incursions. The weather engine now features improved cloud rendering with more volumetric detail and better light scattering. Additionally, SU5 introduces four new photogrammetry cities: Madrid, Toronto, Sydney, and Chicago, expanding the simulator's high-detail coverage. The update also includes a new default livery for the Boeing 747-8i and fixes for various aircraft systems.
Asobo has also updated the SDK, providing developers with new tools for aircraft and scenery creation. The update is available now via the Microsoft Store and Steam. In related news, the company has announced that the next World Update will focus on the Caribbean, with a release planned for December. The community has responded positively to SU5, with many reporting smoother performance and fewer CTDs.
However, some users have reported issues with the new AI traffic, such as aircraft not following ATC instructions correctly. Asobo has acknowledged these reports and stated that a hotfix is in development. Overall, SU5 is a solid step forward for MSFS 2024, addressing key performance concerns and adding meaningful content.
