The latest update brings significant improvements to the default FMS, including full RNAV (RNP) approach support and more realistic turbulence modeling. Flight dynamics also see refinements, particularly in gust response and ground effect.
Laminar Research has pushed X-Plane 12.3.1 to the stable channel, a substantial update that addresses long-standing community requests. The headline feature is a complete rewrite of the default FMS, now offering full RNAV (RNP) approach capability with AR (Authorization Required) support. This means simmers can now fly complex curved approaches like the famous RNP AR RWY 19 at Queenstown (NZQN) with proper LNAV/VNAV guidance. The FMS also gains improved SID/STAR leg types and better handling of intercepts.
Turbulence and gust modeling have been overhauled using new CFD-derived data, resulting in more realistic and less binary responses to weather. The team has also refined ground effect and propeller wash, making low-speed handling and STOL operations feel more authentic. Additionally, the update includes performance optimizations for Vulkan and fixes for several CTDs reported in 12.3.0.
Third-party developers are already updating their fleets to leverage the new FMS. FlightFactor has confirmed that their A320 Ultimate will receive an update next week to integrate the new navdata and approach types. ToLiss is also working on a patch for their A340-600 to ensure compatibility. The update is available now via the X-Plane installer.
