X-Plane 12.3.0 has been released, bringing a completely rewritten ATC system with improved SID/STAR handling and a refined flight model for better ground handling. The update is now available for all users.

Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.3.0, a major update that introduces a completely overhauled air traffic control system. The new ATC, built from the ground up, now supports full SID/STAR assignments, RNAV approaches, and more natural vectoring. According to the release notes, the system uses a new routing engine that dynamically generates clearances based on aircraft performance and weather, and it includes improved voice synthesis with regional accents.

The flight model has also received significant attention. Version 12.3.0 includes a revised ground handling model that more accurately simulates tire friction and steering, addressing long-standing complaints about the previous model's twitchiness. Additionally, the update refines the blade element theory calculations for propeller aircraft, resulting in more realistic engine response and torque effects.

Other improvements include enhanced VR performance, updated default aircraft with new FMS features, and compatibility fixes for third-party add-ons such as those from ToLiss and FlightFactor. Laminar has also added a new particle system for engine smoke and contrails, which can be customized via Plane Maker.

The update is available now via the X-Plane installer. Third-party developers have been given early access to the SDK changes, and several have already announced compatibility updates. For the X-Plane community, 12.3.0 represents a significant step forward in realism and usability, particularly for those who fly online or rely on ATC for IFR operations.
