X-Plane 12.2.0 is now out, featuring a revamped weather system with more accurate cloud rendering and wind prediction. Laminar Research also introduces a new AI ATC voice system that uses phonetic pronunciation for waypoints and runways.
Laminar Research has pushed out X-Plane 12.2.0, a significant update that brings a host of improvements to the simulator's weather and ATC systems. The new weather engine, developed in collaboration with a leading meteorological data provider, offers more accurate depiction of cumulonimbus clouds, wind shear, and microbursts. Pilots will notice a more fluid transition between weather cells, and the updated turbulence model now responds more realistically to terrain and convective activity.
The ATC system also receives a major overhaul, with a new text-to-speech engine that properly pronounces waypoints, SIDs, STARs, and runway numbers using ICAO phonetics. The AI controllers have been trained on a larger dataset, resulting in more natural phraseology and better handling of pilot requests, including go-arounds and missed approaches. Laminar has also fixed several long-standing bugs related to VFR flight following and approach sequencing.
In addition, 12.2.0 introduces a new weather radar for the default G1000 and G3000 units, displaying real-time precipitation returns. The update is available now through the X-Plane Installer, and it is compatible with most existing add-ons, though some plugins may require updates.
