X-Plane 12.2.0 introduces a revamped ATC system with improved SID/STAR handling, realistic weather radar, and enhanced turbulence modeling. The update also includes new default aircraft and performance optimizations.

Laminar Research has released X-Plane 12.2.0, a significant update that brings a host of improvements to the platform. The headline feature is a completely overhauled ATC system, which now supports proper SID/STAR assignments, altitude clearances, and more natural vectoring. The ATC now takes into account aircraft performance and weather conditions, providing a more immersive experience for IFR flights. Additionally, the weather radar has been upgraded to simulate realistic attenuation and ground clutter, and turbulence modeling has been refined based on real-world data.

The update also includes two new default aircraft: the Cirrus SR22 and the Robinson R22 helicopter, both with high-fidelity flight models and detailed systems. The SR22 features a fully functional G1000 avionics suite, while the R22 offers realistic helicopter dynamics. Performance optimizations have been made across the board, with improvements to Vulkan rendering and multi-threading, resulting in higher frame rates on both CPU and GPU-limited systems.

X-Plane 12.2.0 also introduces a new particle system for effects such as contrails, wingtip vortices, and precipitation, enhancing visual realism. The default scenery has been updated with new autogen buildings and improved road networks. Laminar Research has also added support for the new Navigraph navdata format, ensuring up-to-date procedures.

The update is available now as a free download for all X-Plane 12 users. Third-party developers are expected to release compatibility updates for their add-ons in the coming weeks. Early feedback from the community highlights the improved ATC and the smoother performance, though some users have reported minor issues with the new weather radar in certain aircraft. Laminar Research has stated that a hotfix is already in the works.
