Laminar Research has outlined the features coming in X-Plane 12.2.0, including a revamped ATC system, improvements to the blade element theory flight model, and further Vulkan API optimizations. The update aims to enhance realism and performance for both desktop and mobile platforms.

Laminar Research has released detailed information about the upcoming X-Plane 12.2.0 update, set to enter public beta later this month. The headline feature is a completely overhauled ATC system that promises more realistic phraseology, dynamic rerouting based on weather, and improved traffic separation. The new ATC will support SID/STAR assignments and provide more accurate altitude and speed instructions, addressing a long-standing criticism from the community. Additionally, the update brings refinements to the blade element theory flight model, particularly in the areas of propeller wash, ground effect, and adverse yaw, making aircraft like the default Cessna 172 and third-party add-ons from ToLiss and FlightFactor feel even more authentic.

Performance-wise, X-Plane 12.2.0 includes further optimizations to the Vulkan rendering API, reducing CPU overhead and improving frame rates in complex sceneries. The update also introduces a new lighting model for runway and taxiway lights, enhancing night flying realism. For developers, Laminar is providing an updated SDK with new datarefs and commands, allowing for deeper integration of systems like FMS and autopilot logic. This is expected to benefit high-fidelity airliners such as the FlightFactor A320 Ultimate and the upcoming ToLiss A330.

The beta is scheduled to begin on September 25, 2026, with a stable release targeted for late October. Laminar encourages users to participate in the beta and provide feedback via the X-Plane forums. As always, third-party developers are advised to test their products against the beta to ensure compatibility. With these improvements, X-Plane 12 continues to solidify its position as a premier platform for serious flight simulation, particularly for those who value accurate flight dynamics and a robust development ecosystem.
