The upcoming Sim Update 5 for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will overhaul the default ATC system with improved phraseology and dynamic routing, alongside enhancements to live weather depiction, including better cloud rendering and turbulence.

Asobo Studio has outlined the feature set for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Sim Update 5 (SU5), scheduled for release on October 24. The update is poised to address two of the most requested areas: ATC and live weather. The default ATC is receiving a significant upgrade, with a new logic engine that generates more realistic clearances, including SIDs, STARs, and altitude restrictions. Phraseology has been refined to align with ICAO standards, and the system now supports dynamic rerouting based on weather and traffic.

On the weather front, SU5 introduces an improved cloud rendering model that better represents towering cumulus and stratus layers. Turbulence and wind shear effects have been tuned for greater realism, especially during approach and departure. The update also includes a new 'Live Weather' toggle that allows users to blend real-time METAR with forecast data for smoother transitions.

In addition, SU5 brings performance optimizations for DX12 and fixes for several memory leak issues. Third-party developers like PMDG and Fenix Simulations have been working closely with Asobo to ensure compatibility. The beta is currently available to Windows Insider participants, with a full release expected later this month.
