Sim Update 3 for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 introduces a reworked ATC system with better SID/STAR assignment, revised ground friction, and significant helicopter flight-model improvements. The update also adds new photogrammetry cities and fixes long-standing memory issues.
Asobo Studio has outlined the contents of Sim Update 3 (SU3) for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, scheduled for release on September 30. The headline change is a reworked ATC system that now assigns SID/STAR procedures based on active runway and weather, rather than the previous fixed logic. Altitude clearances are more realistic, and the sim now issues speed restrictions on approach. The update also improves ground handling with revised friction coefficients, reducing the excessive braking and directional control issues reported on wet runways.
Helicopter operations receive a substantial upgrade: the flight model now includes improved ground effect, translational lift, and autorotation behavior. Asobo worked with helicopter pilots to refine the new model, which affects both default and third-party rotorcraft. The update also adds four new photogrammetry cities — including Lisbon and Osaka — and updates the global elevation mesh in the Alps.
Memory management has been addressed with a new streaming algorithm that reduces stutters during long flights, particularly on 16GB systems. The SDK gains new tools for developers, including improved SimConnect variables for ATC and ground services. Asobo notes that third-party aircraft using custom ATC logic may need updates to remain compatible.
SU3 is currently in beta testing with select users. The full release will be accompanied by a World Update focused on the Iberian Peninsula, expected in October.
